Found this in the religion forum on Craigslist. Funny stuff....

Yep, I'm wasting time there. Someone posted this...

One side of the debate "believes" there is no God, and the other side "believes" there isn't any God.

My response. (I know, it's pointless really)

An atheist does not believe there is no god, there is an absence of such a belief. It is not the same thing.
The atheist label is only necessary when the concept of a higher power is introduced.

Their response..
that one I will admit that I cannot understand.
are you sure that it isn't that the atheist just does not like the term belief?
do you have a more suitable term?

My response...
The term would not need to be associated with someone that disagrees with the concept of a higher power if there were no such concept.

You are assuming a person has to believe in something. The choices, as you see them, are
"A person believes there is a god."
or
"A person believes there is no god."

I'm saying the choices are,
"A person believes there is a god."
or
"A person does not believe."

There is a distinct difference. A belief requires proof from a rational person, that is why theist like to put the choices in such a way, it assumes to force the requirement of proof on the person that does not believe. A negative, asserting something doesn't exist, requires no proof, but by saying an atheist has a 'belief', changes it to a positive, which then must be proved.
