I’m seventeen and in the dean’s office at my high school. I’m here because I’ve just made it a point to humiliate a teacher in front of his class. He’s a priest who teaches sex ed, which as far as I’m concerned is like an anorexic who teaches a cooking class. A few moments ago, he was toeing the Catholic party line by insisting that to teach teenagers about safe sex is to issue tacit consent to their premarital libidinous urges. I argued that kids were going to have sex, and that any belief to the contrary was unrealistic and stupid—period. Teaching kids how to at least keep themselves safe during sex may be surrendering the fort in some ways, but it’s a necessary bow to reason. He wouldn’t budge. His obstinacy in the face of all common sense—meaning that which wasn’t based on superstitious nonsense or the supposedly infallible ramblings of a seventy year old man in Rome—infuriated me. I was determined not simply to prove him wrong, but to publicly pummel him and his ridiculous belief system. I knew he drove a Volvo— a bizarre liberation from his vow of poverty. I asked him to hold his car keys up in front of the class. He did. I asked him to list for me what was on his key ring. He obliged with some trepidation, counting off his keys one-by-one until finally arriving at the item I was looking for—the remote control for his car alarm. I asked him why he felt the need to take steps to ensure that his car wouldn’t be stolen when everyone understood that people shouldn’t steal cars.He is recounting a moment in his life which is spent revisiting memorable occasions from his past. Interesting argument.
