So I finally got a job. It's only part time though, on the weekends and a few hours during the morning hours of the week. I couldn't believe how they did it though, waited until today to call and tell me, and then I had to bug them about it besides. I'm sure they are busy though, and it isn't all about me, not in their eyes anyway.

It is about me though, when this is really the only job I wanted because it gets me working in the radiology field, if just doing paperwork. I had put off looking elsewhere, kinda put my job search on hold after they called the first time. I was eyeing the local Oil Stop though, they have a sign up again.

NOW HIRING - inquire within

They always have the sign up, it goes up and down so much you would think it was a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant. I was resigned to being there first thing Monday morning to offer them some more reliable help than they are used to. They must have a hard time getting reliable help, that's what the help wanted sign going up and down like a piston tells me. So I had made that decision oh about sometime after 4:00, when I was sure the people at the radiology place would be shutting down for the weekend. Then they called after 5:30, I was so dumbfounded I probably didn't sound as enthusiastic as they wanted me to sound. It's probably the best part of her job, giving people good news, or what she hopes will be good news, and I ruined it. In my defense though I did have a headache, and was lying down in an effort to get rid of it. That, and the fact that I had been in the middle of adjusting to getting back on the shoe leather express for other work. She kinda threw me for a loop. That's my story anyway, and I'm stickin to it...

After thinking it over, I realize she was probably expecting something different, and I was just expecting her to name my appointed place of duty. That's what I am used to, I get orders and I follow them... usually. :) But that's what I was looking for, and she is probably used to employees that need to be coddled, so we weren't really seeing eye to eye. After talking it over with my wife I've decided to explain it to my new supervisor next time I talk to her.

And here I thought I was doing real good getting settled back into civilian life.

On another note, I received a new internal wireless card for the laptop. I just had to do it, after the pcmcia card quit working when I dropped it. I found one on Ebay, and it was a very reputable seller, so I went ahead and got it. I installed it, got the drivers installed and everything was working ok, seemed to be anyway. Cept when I tried to browse, nothing would work. It detected the network fine, but something wasn't quite right. Did some research, spent a LOT of time day before yesterday trying to figure it out. Then I went on the dell website and got into a chat session with a wireless guru. You would think they are gurus, but I don't know. The session was moving so slow that I was fixing dinner and doing research on my own while waiting for the guy's response.

He took me through a bunch of settings on the laptop, and it got me thinking about settings on the router, I just knew he was going to go there next. So I did, and got the notion I should check the firmware for my Linksys. I did, it was dated sometime in 2002. The latest on the linksys site was for last year, and the issues it addressed included wireless problems. I told the guy this, he didn't think it would have anything to do with my problem, thought it would have something to do with security settings. I did it anyway, updated the firmware. The guy must have been frustrated because without warning he said it seemed he answered all my questions and shut down the session. He probably saw where it was going and, knowing the sessions are logged, didn't want to look like an ass to whomever analyzes that shit. He shut down before I could tell him it worked!! Yep, I was so relieved. Just as soon as the firmware update was done the laptop was browsing fine. Of course in the course of checking everything out one of the things I'd done was reload Windows. I had to finish doing all the shit that goes along with that, loading Firefox and fixing the settings, Office, and virus software with updates... all the stuff I couldn't do until I got on the net.

That was my computer excitement for the week. Now I have a friend needs a scanner installed, last time I checked anyway......
