Finished Imperial Cruise. As I said in an earlier post, it is a book bashing Roosevelt. The author uses the word 'ayran' quite a bit, which seems to be a subtle way of associating Roosevelt with Hitler and the Nazi party. He found many quotes attributed to politicians of the day that include the term, and used it several times when referencing people's thoughts and actions at the time. I found it irritating, but not so much that I couldn't finish the book. It was irritating not because I don't believe Roosevelt was a racist, but because using the term is rather disingenuous. Roosevelt didn't have a monopoly on racial bias, racism back then was socially acceptable. What's more, it was supported 'scientifically' with the now debunked field of Eugenics. Disconcerting as it is, Hitler's ideas were not confined to the Nazi party. We had our own version of the concentration camps with Japanese internment. Although they were a milder version, the motivations behind them were the same.
Started listening to Winds of War by Herman Wouk. I've known of the book since its publication, but it is not the kind of book that has appealed to me up to this point. There is a sequel too, though I'm not resigned to doing that one as well.
