It is pretty clear there are very few news outlets that report things as they really are. They are like a gang of teenagers, grabbing every bit they can twist, and do so to stir the most controversy. It seems it is easier to do this, create their own sensation, than it is to report on something they may have to dig into a little. That would take actual work. There was talk that bloggers would take over the job of real reporting, because they would do the work that real reporting necessitates. It is not happening though, as the good blogs got popular, they quickly digressed to doing the same things the media does... most of them anyway.
What prompted this? On Media Matters, they pointed out a remark that Michelle Obama made, that others were quick to take out of context. "if you can't run your own house, you can't run the White House." In an editorial for the Chicago Sun-Times online, they quoted her, and actually said she didn't elaborate. Bob Schieffer supposedly started it all, making the suggestion in a broadcast. I don't like Schieffer, his book was so full of himself and misinformation it was painful to read. Anyway, this is what she said...
That one of the most important things that we need to know about the next President of the United States is, is he somebody that shares our values? Is he somebody that respects family? Is a good and decent person? So our view was that, if you can't run your own house, you certainly can't run the White House. So, so we've adjusted our schedules to make sure that our girls are first, so while he's traveling around, I do day trips. That means I get up in the morning, I get the girls ready, I get them off, I go and do trips, I'm home before bedtime. So the girls know that I was gone somewhere, but they don't care. They just know that I was at home to tuck them in at night, and it keeps them grounded, and, and children, the children in our country have to know that they come first. And our girls do and that's why we're doing this. We're in this race for not just our children, but all of our children.
Her obvious elaboration clearly shows her remark was directed at their own family. I watched the entire thing, and the above quote was part of a larger theme concerning their decision about whether he should actually run for president.
