I have been hanging out in the atheist forum the past few days on Craigslist. This was an interesting post...
opportunity to offer something up that makes sense. There are no right or wrong answers, this is just a discussion topic. Be prepared to provide your reasoning for whatever you say here.
Let's see what really goes on inside those heads of yours.
------------------------------------------------
I have a few questions:
#1: Do humans currently possess the ability or capability to know every single last bit of information in the universe, from the beginning of time until now?
#2: Do humans have actual possession of every single last bit of information in the universe, from the beginning of time until now?
(I'm not referring to a hypothetical or theoretical possibilty on #2. I'm referring to actual present day human intellect and acquired information)
I would hope your answer to #2 is no. If it's yes, then you are delusional and should stop right here.
For the rest, a follow-up question:
#3: On a scale of 0 to 100, where do you think we are today?
0= Absolutely no acquired knowledge at all.
100= Complete and total knowledge of everything there is to know in the universe from the beginning of time until now.
I responded like this. It was a spur of the moment thing, and I don't think fast on my feet, and since I have to leave for work soon it isn't the greatest..... That's not to say it would ever be the greatest. Anyway....
"Human beings cannot know everything, therefore human beings cannot discount the notion of a higher power."
Here we have someone wanting someone here to make sense of the argument against a higher power, using 'reasoning'.
An atheist would conclude, using their reason alone, that there is no higher power, based on the fact that there is no evidence that would support any such claim.
However since the suggestion is made that something for which there is no evidence whatsoever does in fact exist, an atheist is then asked to forego all reasoning, which the atheist was compelled to use in the first place, and profess the existence of such a higher power solely on the whim of another human being.
Such a claim in itself cannot be used as evidence though, not in any reasonable discussion.
In other words, an atheist is asked to prove the non-existence of a higher power, yet urged to believe the existence of such in spite of the total lack of evidence.
