I finished Mind of My Mind by Octavia Butler. It was a very good book. I wrote a review on it for Amazon.com.....
The book is amazing in that it is so poorly written. The writing is terrible, so much so that it is hard to follow at times who is saying what, or who's pov is being described. In spite of all that the book is extremely powerful. The lame dialogue and harsh mechanics are simply overpowered by the storyline and ideas in the book. It is also amazing that she does everything in so few pages. I could barely walk away from it when I had to. The woman was a genius.
What I didn't talk about was that the reasons the mechanics were so bad. She improved as a writer in later books, but she could have improved more quickly had she had a good editor. It was obvious she didn't, otherwise the writing would have been better. My opinion? I think it has a lot to do with, or had, now that she is dead, the facts that she was black and a female.
