Another general has come out against Rumsfeld and how he handled things in Iraq. This is how much I distrust what comes out in the news these days. After a few moments I thought about my reactions, and whether the news stories were intended to invoke such reactions.
One of my first thoughts was that maybe these generals were just pussies working up to selling a book that they have yet to write. Of course there will be the outcry to get Donald out, and it was this inevitability that made me think this all might be staged. If one supposed Karl Rove to still be working for Bush, the official word is he isn't, I think, then it would be a classic Rove move to improve things for the president. The clamoring for the way things are going in Iraq is getting too much to ignore, and the president is taking much of the shrapnel.
Of course, if it came out that someone else were involved, played a big part in how things went there, then we couldn't blame a lot on the president, and the focus would shift. Kind of like the Oliver North thing. So old Rummy it would seem in such a scenario would eventually take the fall for things, with the goal of raising the president's ratings in the polls.
Why should anyone care, Bush can't run again? His ratings affect the way we will look at the next republican candidate. It seems so far away, but the groundwork has to be laid early.....
