Annie Proulx rips 'Crash,' Academy
That's the headline. I read the article, and the commentary. This lady tried to be distinguished as she chewed on the loss, but there is just no way to be so without looking like a buffoon of a sore loser. She goes so far as to call the movie that did win, Crash, 'Trash'.I don't know, I haven't seen Brokeback yet, but I saw Crash. It was very good, lots of controversial issues intertwined to make a good movie. I plan to see Brokeback when it comes out on video, just to see what all the hype is about, judge for myself whether it's a better movie than Crash, or whether it's any good at all. It will be taking time away from my reading and homework, but I'll suffer through it. I don't see many movies, I see it as a waste usually, but I enjoy mulling over the controversy. That leads me to believe that I will enjoy Good Night and Good Luck more than either of them.
But back to this woman trying to stir up a stink. It seems she believes her criticism is worth something by virtue of authoring the story that Brokeback is based on. Here she is stewing that the movie, of which she had little to do with beyond writing the story, was voted best picture. There are very few short stories that get made into movies, so the chances are slim that it will happen at all. Then there is the fact that the success of the movie has nothing whatsoever to do with the story it is based on. In other words, if there is anything good about the movie at all, it could be attributed to the director, producer, cast, screenwriters, or anyone else that put any effort into the movie itself. The author of the story had no hand in creating the movie, so has no more right to criticize the outcome of the Academy awards, not to mention the overall show itself.
