Brennan's uncle, Bob Hawkins, said his nephew may have been afraid to contact the strangers because they weren't using the password his family had adopted.
The family explained that Brennan was born prematurely and he is socially immature as a result.
"He doesn't have any disabilities; he's just immature," Toby Hawkins said.
I'm sorry, but social immaturity is not a consequence of premature birth. I have a sister that was born prematurely, and she is far from socially immature. These people have a notion where things can lead, inferences that can be made from the boy's actions, and they are trying to head them off before someone gets the courage to say them publicly. I don't know anyone that would expect their children to use passwords outside the home. Furthermore, it is quite possible the kid would have ended up dead as a result. Of course, had that happened, it would have never come to light that he was hiding from the volunteers......
