I was in Phoenix this weekend, and we had to pick up a paper to get movie times. On the front page was another page in the continuing saga of the missing jogger. It seems the parents of both the missing jogger and her husband issued a statement, by way of fax to local news agencies, that the husband has disclosed information that makes further searching unnecessary. Because of this, they asked that all searching cease.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

The local police keeping saying the husband is not a suspect, but a 'person of interest' in the case. Where the hell did this category come from? Either the guy has an alibi that makes it impossible to have been involved, or he doesn't. Which means he's a suspect, or he's not. Where the fuck did this 'gray' area come from?

Well, they finally arrested the guy. It seems in that area of the country you have the right to avoid the title of suspect.

And another thing that I've been wondering about this story. Why is it kept so low key that these people are associated with FLDS? This stands for Fundamentalists of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Sound familiar? It probably won't, these people don't get out much. They are an extremist group that has been excommunicated from the more socially acceptable Mormon church. They openly practice polygamy, and secretly practice pedophilia. Is that a word? Anyway, those are the people the Krakauer guy wrote about in his Banner of heaven book.

They made the front page of the same paper as well that day. In Arizona anyway. It amazes me how this is kept from the rest of the country as much as possible. It seems Warren Jeffs, the 'prophet' for FLDS keeps kicking young boys out of the community. Some news stories have said the ratio of 50% men to women curtails their polygamy practices quite a bit, so the leader has to get rid of the younger male crowd so there are more younger females to go around to the older guys that already have several wives. One column I read suggested that the younger guys are kicked out because they keep taking the younger women for wives, which is natural of course, but the older guys can't keep their hands off the younger females. They really take the old cliche to heart, "If she's old enough to bleed, she's old enough for me!"

According to some accounts, the saying goes for the young guys as well. There are some reports the older guys can't keep their hands off the younger guys either. Anyway, some of these guys that are kicked out of the community are already married, but the 'prophet' Jeffs wants to give the woman to an older member in the community. Woman is a relative term though, these people marry their girls off in their early teens. That's why Elizabeth Smart was taken way back when, so the dude that took her could make her his wife.
